Karachi-based model 24-year-old Erica Robin is the first ever model to be nominated from the deeply conservative Muslim-majority country, Pakistan.
In 72 years of The Miss Universe beauty pageant, this is the first time a model from Pakistan has participated in the event.
Although Robin is happy, however, her participation has earned her the wrath of many political and religious leaders from her country, who have branded her as “shameful.”
As per the Independent, Robin started her modeling career in 2020 and holds a degree in Business Administration.
She’s proud of the fact that she got to represent Pakistan on a world stage, but is unsure of the backlash she’s been facing.
As Robin tried to represent a country that does not want to be represented, she wishes to “change this mindset that Pakistan is a backward country.”
The 72nd Miss Universe pageant was held on November 18, 2023, at the National Gymnasium in Sal Salvador, El Salvador.

Despite resistance from her country, Robin was selected in the top 20 contestants list of the beauty pageant which has participants competing from more than 80 countries. Although she was not shortlisted in the top 10 list.
Nicaragua’s Sheynnis Palacio was crowned the winner of the beauty pageant in a glittering ceremony. She is the first woman from Nicaragua to win the title.
